China's National Health Commission and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM) on Thursday released the 2025 protocol for chikungunya fever (CHIK) to guide treatment and improve standardized care across medical institutions.
According to the protocol, which is based on the 2008 edition, CHIK is an acute infectious disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV), transmitted through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. It is clinically characterized by fever, joint pain, and rash.
Chikungunya fever is widely prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, with its geographic spread continuing to expand. In China, Aedes mosquitoes are widely distributed, and in recent years, multiple local outbreaks have occurred due to imported cases.
There is currently no available vaccine for the chikungunya virus in China. Preventive measures focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites to reduce mosquito density. Individuals are advised to use mosquito coils, repellents, and mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites.
Travelers to areas where chikungunya fever is endemic should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid infection, CCTV reported.
