US President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed his condolences after former president Biden announced he had been diagnosed with aggressive form of prostate cancer.
"Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Biden was diagnosed with aggressive form of prostate cancer on Friday, said a statement from his personal office on Sunday. The cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), has metastasized to the bone, said the statement, according to the Xinhua News Agency.
Earlier, Biden reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to find a "small nodule" on his prostate.
"While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management," Xinhua reported, citing the statement.
"The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians," added the statement.
Aged 82, Biden served as US president from January 2021 to January 2025 as the oldest-serving president in the history of the US, according to the Xinhua report.
The ABC News reported that as Biden and his family review treatment options, former president Barack Obama and other political leaders began reaching out to share support for the former US president.
Obama posted a message on X on Sunday evening, saying, "Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery."
"Our hearts are with President Biden and his entire family right now," California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted to X on Sunday upon learning the news. "A man of dignity, strength, and compassion like his deserves to live a long and beautiful life. Sending strength, healing and prayers his way."
